Ayurveda Lifestyle tips to minimise Osteoarthritis
There are different types of arthritis but generally it’s important to know that in Ayurveda we believe that arthritis develops from the colon. Our aim in treating arthritis is to remove ama or toxins from the joint back to the colon where we then need to eliminate it.
It is therefore important to clean the colon and the number one treatment for this is to take 1 tsp of Triphala at night with ½ cup warm water. Triphala is a mix of three berries very high in Vitamin C.

Drink Ajwain (carom seed) water. To make ajwain water take 2 tsp of ajwain and soak it into one glass of water overnight. Mix it and strain the water in the morning. Add a tsp of honey to the mixture and drink it. Continue it daily for 15-20 days to get the benefits.

Add turmeric to your meals.

Attempt to have at least 50g of fibre per day.

We treat arthritis differently depending on whether the arthritis is dry and cracking in nature (vata) or inflamed and hot (pitta) or inflamed and clammy/cold to touch (kapha).  An Ayurveda lifestyle consult will be able to determine individualised treatment but here are some tips to follow of a general manner:

Vata type arthritis
Eat warm foods. Avoid nightshade family foods such as tomato, potato, eggplant.
Apply Mahanarayan oil to affected joint. Then soak your joint in very warm water with a cheesecloth or handkerchief with 2 tbsp. brown mustard seeds in the water.

Pitta type arthritis
Pitta arthritis is usually associated with pain. Eat cool foods and avoid all spicy foods, tomatoes, spinach, gherkins. I had one client who stopped tomatoes in her diet and noticed a huge improvement in her hand arthritis.
Externally, apply cool castor oil or coconut oil to your affected area.

Kapha type arthritis
Avoid all dairy foods. Avoid all cold drinks. A ginger paste is recommended externally. Mix 1 tsp ginger powder with a little water and rub over your affected area. Perform a quick skin test first before you spread all over your joint as ginger can be hot in nature.

Summer Energy Drink:
1 tsp tukmaria seeds (or chia seeds). Tukmektia seeds are much yummier than chia IMHO, they are basil seeds.
1 tsp sugar
1 squeeze of lemon juice
1/2 tsp black salt
2 glasses of water
Wait 5 minutes then either sieve out seeds or drink with them in.
Here’s a fab tip to remove toxins and boost your immunity in 5 minutes per day. Dry brushing (garshana) in Ayurveda has been used for thousands of years and my clients and myself have found huge improvements in our skin with dry brushing before a shower/bath,
Approximately one third of your body’s toxins are eliminated through the skin. Dry skin brushing helps to unclog your pores and stimulate your circulation to release those toxins more efficiently.

Here are the steps:

Get a natural bristle skin brush or glove.
Before you take a shower or bath, start dry brushing at your feet and begin using long sweeping motions, brushing toward your heart. Massage your tummy clockwise.
Brush 5-7 times in each area, overlapping as you go.
Then jump in the shower/bath.

Immediately after getting out of the shower rub your entire body with warm coconut oil (in Summer) and sesame oil (in Winter). Use the same long strokes that you did when you brushed.

Your body will thank you after just a few dry brushing sessions. Take note of the difference between your skin now and your skin in about a month.
