Ayurveda and Diverticulitis

Diverticula are bulging pouches that can develop in lower intestine. Diverticulitis can occur when these pouches get inflamed or infected. Diverticulitis is predominantly a Vata imbalance.

Amalaki is an Ayurvedic herb that helps re-tone your colon. It is found in the formula Triphala.

Avoid stimulant laxatives and enemas that increase pressure in the lower colon.

Favour oily, salty, sour foods especially Aloe Vera Gel,  Okra,  Sweet Potato, Apple (cooked),  Banana,  Cantaloupe / Melons,  Lemon,  Mango,  Peaches,  Pears,  Pomegranate,  Prunes (dried), Barley,  Oat Milk,  Oats / Oatmeal,  Tapioca, Beetroot,  Carrot,  Taro Root, Cardamom,  Salt (Mineral Salt), Ghee, Mung Beans.

Other helpful supplements:

Taking aloe vera gel tablets, probiotics, slippery elm supplements, flax seeds (small crushed seeds are OK to have with diverticulitis), wheat germ, hot/warm water 1-2 glasses per day, drink chamomile tea.
