Oil pulling is an age-old remedy rooted in Ayurvedic medicine that uses oils to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. It has the added effect of whitening teeth naturally and evidence even shows that it may be beneficial for gum health and help counteract harmful bacteria in the mouth.( British Dentist Journal).
Oil pulling is the act of swishing oil usually sesame or coconut oil in the mouth for a few minutes first thing in the morning before having breakfast. I initially was surprised how effective this routine is on gum health, both for myself and clients, even those with quite long standing gum issues.
Oil Pulling Instructions
- Use 2 tspns of your choice of oil into the mouth. I use an unprocessed and cold pressed sesame oil with mint that I get in for Fusion Ayurveda from an organic shop in Australia but a lot of people use coconut oil straight from the pantry.
- Swish for as long as you have time for. You can swish for up to 20 minutes but most of us don’t have time for that so I’ve got my routine down to 5 minutes, mostly while I’m multitasking doing something else.
- Make sure you spit the oil out as you don’t want to swallow the oil with all your overnight bacteria in it.
- Rinse mouth well with warm water. Warm water seems to clean the mouth better or you can rinse with a salt water mix (1/2 tspn to one cup of water).
It can take a month of daily oil pulling to start noticing improvements in your oral health. Let me know if you give it a go and your results. This is great for kids too, as soon as they are old enough to know to spit the oil out and not swallow it.
